Our club's service projects enable us to enjoy fellowship while helping the community. Among our service projects are:
Adopt-a-Highway
Our club service activities include the Adopt-a-Highway program. A two mile stretch of Route 31 as you enter the city form the west, is kept clean by the Rotary Club of Lockport. On a few Saturdays per year we meet early in the morning, don our hardhats and gloves, and clean up the trash that has accumulated.
Bell-Ringing for the Salvation Army
In mid-December of each year, we help our neighbors by manning the Salvation Army's red kettles for an evening. There is a friendly competition among the area service clubs to see who can raise the most money and we are proud to say that we usually come in either first or second for the Lockport area.
Turkey Dinner
In mid-December, members volunteer to cook or serve a turkey dinner for patrons of the Salvation Army's Sister Mary Loretto Memorial Soup Kitchen.
Scholarships
Each year the club makes applications available for scholarships to local youth. There are two $1,000 scholarships given each year and two $4,000 scholarships given (over four years) as well as a $1,000 scholarship to a vocational college education.
Community Pool
In 2006, after much planning, the Rotary Club of Lockport and the city of Lockport came to an agreement whereby the Rotary Club would raise money and coordinate a complete rehabilitation of the Lockport Community Pool in Outwater Park. The pool is approximately 40 years old and was in desperate need of improvement. We have expanded the project slightly and continue to improve the immediate area around the pool and hope to have everything done in 2007. The improvements and work should allow the pool to serve local families and children for another 40 years.
Fund Raising Events
Holiday Raffle
Our signature fundraising event is our annual raffle party. A gala event is held in February to raise money for our scholarship program. Members sell tickets within the community for $100 that entitle the purchaser to two dinners, drinks, and the chance to win several cash or gift prizes. It is a wonderful event with entertainment, fellowship, and it is all for a worthy cause.
Installation Dinner
Held June of every year
where we thank our outgoing officers for their service and welcome our newest slate of officers.
Mother's Day Rose Sale
Rotarians sell several hundred dozens of red roses throughout the community each year to raise money for our community projects.
Basketball Tournament
After Thanksgiving (usually early December) each year we host a four team, high school boys basketball tournament that matches up our local Lockport Lions against three area teams from Western New York.
Paul Perna Memorial Golf Tournament
The Rotary Club of Lockport has run a golf tournament for many years but it has taken on new meaning since 2005 when we renamed the tournament in honor of Paul Perna. Rotarians gather up friends and family for a great day of golf, food, and drink and we raise money for our worthy causes.
